Kerygma 4 Kids - Grade 5, Chapter 3 --- Jesus is Your Valentine

Once the children experience the love of God and have had the opportunity to ponder Christ's saving work, we want to invite them to respond. While adults and older youth have the capacity to make a choice to follow Christ, younger children can make commitments that are more appropriate for their age. In this next section, the children have an opportunity to invite Jesus to be the center of their lives.

The theme of Valentine's Day continues to help the children explore what it means to belong to Christ. By virtue of their Baptism, they do belong to Christ; however, as they grow and mature, their commitment to Jesus needs to be intentional. Relationships are a two-way street. The children themselves need to make a choice to respond to Jesus' offer of friendship.

At this age, children have a strong sense of belonging. They like sports, clubs, and activities. It is important for the children to understand that, no matter how much we sin, we always belong to God. The children should also be assured that God is faithful and can be trusted.

The lesson concludes by teaching children how to share the Good News of Jesus with others. By virtue of our Baptism, we are called to evangelize. It is important to lay this foundation at an early age. The final activity gives the child the language by which to proclaim the kerygma themselves. Children can be encouraged to introduce their friends to Jesus and share what they have experienced and learned.
